Tell us a little about yourself?

My wife and I have four kids and live with our dog, cat, guinea pigs and chickens in South East Melbourne. Our lives swing from chaos to love and cuddles… often several times an hour!

How would you describe your role in your household?

I’m lovingly referred to as the CFO, while my wife is the CEO.

What drew you to PocketSmith?

At first, I was a bit intimidated by how many features it has, but after a short trial, I realised that PocketSmith does the basics that so many others do, while also offering really detailed data tracking and analysis in the background. It allowed us to start simple but then get more control of our finances as we grew more confident.

How long have you been with us?

Two years.

What do you primarily use PocketSmith for?

Tracking daily expenses, sticking to monthly budgets, and keeping an eye on spending areas that may creep up unnoticed. Lately, though, the best feature has been forecasting cash flows and future spending. This allows us to save, meet our goals and ensure we can look ahead and avoid any problems.

How has PocketSmith changed the way you do money?

I was always really good at spreadsheets and thought they were the only way I could have enough flexibility to track our finances as we wanted. PocketSmith now does all of that. Given the automatic feeds and the easy, quick interface and layout, it allows me to manage every cent of our household spending in only minutes a day. If I fall behind for a few days, I can catch up quickly.

What are your favourite features?

Budgets that can be easily adjusted and progress reports that allow us to check in every week throughout the month, and stick to what we planned.

Got any tips?

Focus on understanding what is happening with your money first. Times are tight for many families. Get a good handle on where your money is going and get things under control for a few months. Track down every cent, then set targets to increase spending to meet your goals, and reduce spending wherever you can.

What’s the best money decision you made in the past 12 months?

Refinancing our home to go on a three-month holiday, driving around the Australian outback with the kids.
