Introducing the Global Spending Map - your window into the spending habits of people from around the globe! Curious about how much the world spends on subscriptions? Or want to know which country has the cheapest grocery costs? Our interactive map, powered by the active community of PocketSmith users, lets you explore the world's expense patterns to provide a unique, comparative perspective.
We're excited to share this tool with you and can't wait to discover the insights you'll unearth. When you discover intriguing findings, we encourage you to share them with us and the world, so we can all join the conversation.
Start by selecting a particular category from the dropdown menu. You choose what months to compare with the dropdown menus below the map, as well as which currency to show the results in.
Each country has a card that shows the average spend of each month selected, and the percentage of how much that has increased or decreased between the two. Clicking on a country or its card will pull that country to the top of the table, allowing for multiple specific countries to be highlighted for comparison. Clicking these again will remove them from your comparison.
Each card features a coloured confidence meter, indicating how confident we are about the accuracy of the information. The more people with transactions in the selected category for the selected comparison, the more confident we are that the change reflects reality.
In PocketSmith, users assign their transactions to categories to help classify their earning and spending. We’ve taken the monthly average spending across common household expense categories from the major countries that PocketSmith operates in.
Expense categories have been genericised, and their spending values have been aggregated to protect against revealing any identifying information. The map works from these aggregated statistics, not on raw user data in PocketSmith directly. We’ve only calculated statistics for a household category when there are sufficient data points for all users to remain anonymous.
